What to consider before purchasing your logo or branding online…

You’ve seen those $299 online logo deals (or less if you use that $5 site). I can pretty much guarantee that your logo design will look like someone else’s. I know because I’ve heard this from people that have used the service or seen it in use. The person doing your logo may have never done a logo before, it may be someone that is a student, it may be someone in another country. To me that’s like playing roulette. It’s always 50/50 even if every time you’ve seen it, its coming up red.

What kind of file formats will they send you if you use those cheap sites? Only one jpeg or perhaps a png. Later, you want to use that image on your website and it’s too small. You try to contact the person and they are no where to be found. You’ll need to then pay someone else to do the work again or create something new from scratch so that all your materials can match and not have just one off pieces with no cohesive look to your business branding.

I question their use of clip art, colors and fonts. Did they really pay for the use of that font? Do they understand typography and know what that font says to the buyer? What about the color? Does the person on the other end of the computer know what they are doing? Do they understand your business? Do they speak English well? Do they know about tension and why it’s bad to have those points if they are not intentional (see example)?

For me to do a custom logo design, just for you, it takes a lot of research into getting to know you, your business, your market and your competition. We go through a whole discovery process. Woohoo! I make sure that your logo will have commercial fonts — meaning you have the right to use those fonts for business purposes. I do a color study to find just the right shade for your logo but I also give you a black and white version. When I’m done your logo should emanate your brand’s personality, your business personality. It should be a visual identity that is uniquely you! I can’t search the whole internet, but to the best of my knowledge (or research skills) I will give you a logo that I don’t think is out there already. It will be professional, high quality and I’ll give you all the right file types so you can use your logo for years to come.
